What Makes This Company Special

Founded in 1736, Yawataya Isogoro is one of Japan’s oldest spice producers. It started at Zenkoji Temple in Nagano, a mountainous region blessed with nature. Historically, spices were offered as herbal medicine to temple visitors seeking healing and comfort—this is where Shichimi Togarashi (seven-spice
blend) was born.
Shichimi is known for its perfectly balanced blend of aroma, heat, and depth. Even today, the ingredients are mostly sourced from Nagano, with only dried mandarin peel brought in from the Kansai region. Each batch is still hand-blended, preserving its artisanal flavor unlike mass-produced seasonings.
The red tin has become a beloved symbol of Japanese spice, often brought back as a souvenir from Nagano. The original store is now a cultural landmark that attracts visitors from around the world.

Product Spotlight: Japan’s 7-Spice Secret

Shichimi Togarashi is a staple found in nearly every Japanese household.
Classic Shichimi: A nutty, spicy blend of black and white sesame, chili, citrus peel, sansho (Japanese pepper), and ginger—crafted using traditional methods for bold, aromatic flavor.
Yuzu Shichimi: Bright yuzu citrus paired with chili, mandarin peel, sesame, and sansho, delivering a refreshing and layered spice mix.
Ramen Shichimi: Designed to complement noodles and soups, this blend features black and white pepper, onion, yuzu, and seaweed.
Deep-Roasted Shichimi: Finely ground chili with roasted sesame, umami-rich seaweed, and a touch of yuzu aroma.
What is umami? It’s the “fifth taste,” joining sweet, sour, salty, and bitter. Found in shiitake mushrooms, seaweed, and kelp, umami enhances food naturally without needing excess salt or artificial flavoring.

Long-Term Value Through Tradition and Innovation

Yawataya Isogoro maintains its commitment to quality by using clean, healthy ingredients and traditional hand-blending techniques. All spices are free of additives and GMOs, and ingredients are locally sourced
whenever possible. The company continues to innovate while honoring its centuries-old roots.
